Simple WordPress Fix For Security

leave a comment

Well, technically not WordPress, but your hosting is probably vulnerable.

From http://www.darkreading.com/database_security/security/attacks/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=224300052&cid=nl_DR_DAILY_2010-04-13_h if you want to read the whole thing.

There was an attack on WordPress blogs hosted at Network Solutions, but your host is probably guilty as well.

The gist of what happened is the wp-config.php was readable by the world and the crackers got access to the database passwords and logins which are stored in that file in plain text.

It is a WordPress problem because that was considered best practice. In reality, none of your file need to be world readable, only readable by the web server, so you can safely eliminate any world read permissions.

How to Stop svchost.exe High CPU Usage

leave a comment

By: Liz Cornwell

(I hear from people all the time that their computers are “slow”. Rather than reinvent the wheel, I figured I would just post an article that Liz already wrote that explains a common reason for slow Windows computers – jag)

Svchost.exe is known to cause high CPU usage problems. I’m sure you’ve been in a situation like this: you’re working on your computer and enjoying yourself when all of a sudden it becomes agonizingly slow and even starts freezing up. You press CTRL+ALT+DEL to open the Task Manager, click on the Processes tab,  and see that there are several instances of svchost.exe running and one of them is using up 90% – 100% of CPU! Some people will think: “OMG! My computer’s got a virus!!!”. Well, that might be true, because some malware masks itself as svchost, but most likely it’s just Windows being Windows.

Project Natal- The Verdict

After watching Microsoft’s E3 presentation in its entirety back in May I was very impressed by the games on their way to the system. I was getting a bit bored until my favourite director Spielberg walked onto the stage hinting at a new Microsoft gadget.

The almost impossible Milo program was shown off the world by the English company Lionhead. The woman playing the game was actually able to hold a conversation with the in game boy and pass objects to him from the real world.
