Halloween has ancient origins; tradition says that spirits of the dead roamed the earth on this evening. Decorating private homes on Halloween is a fairly recent custom though. In modern times children understand that Halloween is merely “pretend”. Children, and even adults, dress up in costumes and go from home to home to demand treats. If the people in these homes didn’t have any treats, mischievous or evil spirits might play tricks on the house. These tricks include; rubbing soap on the windows or decorating the trees with toilet paper.

Every year, people decorate their homes with symbolic Halloween decorations. Many of these Halloween decorations are quite elaborate and enjoyable. Without spending too much money, you can create some distinctive Halloween decorations and have the best Halloween decorations in your neighborhood.

Inexpensive Halloween Decorations You Can Make

The jack-o-lantern, or carved pumpkin, is the most important Halloween decoration. Your local supermarket will have inexpensive pumpkins for sale starting about two weeks before Halloween. Make sure you choose a pumpkin that matches the size requirements you need, from small to extra large. Large turnips are used as jack-o-lanterns by Irish children of Celtic descent.

A jack-o-lanterns primary purpose is to scare away ghosts, goblins and other unfriendly spirits with their carved faces. Children love to show off their carving creativity so let them help choosing and carving the Halloween jack-o-lantern. Remember, decorating a jack-o-lantern is not only fun for children, but also for the whole family.

A Halloween decoration gaining in popularity are synthetic pumpkins that are equipped with different colored lights inside. Many families prefer the traditional pumpkin jack-o-lantern, but these synthetic pumpkins run all evening with batteries. Unlike the traditional pumpkin-carved jack-o-lanterns, synthetics have no candles inside them to create light. Synthetic jack-o-lanterns have multi-colored lights inside making them an ideal Halloween decoration. A synthetic pumpkin light can’t be blown out by the wind or rain. Lining your sidewalk with these scary faces is sure to widen the eyes of any trick-or-treater!

Halloween decorations can be much more than jack-o-lanterns. If you would like to make your house more elaborate why not decorate your porch and play scary Halloween music and sounds with a looping cassette tape or CD. You can use inexpensive black and orange crepe paper, synthetic spider webs and bats, and scary painted faces.

Adults can make the most of Halloween fun by dressing themselves up as some type of Halloween decoration! Count Dracula, the Wolfman, or Frankenstein’s Monster answering the door always delights youngsters when they arrive at the door for trick or treating. Star Wars, Star Trek and Pirates of the Caribbean characters are other popular adult decorative costumes. Captain Jack Sparrow, as played by Johnny Depp in the three “Pirates” movies, is an extremely popular and inexpensive costume according to costume dealers. Parents also tend to approve of this costume, and the children love it since Captain Jack is a scoundrel with the heart of a hero.

Everyone Can Use Halloween Decorations

Samhain, as Halloween was known in among the ancient Celts, is viewed by some families as a non-Christian celebration. Halloween decorations can be easily altered for these families who, because of their religious beliefs, choose not to join in trick or treating. Children can dress as Sheppard’s, one of the three Wise Men, or comic book heroes like Superman. Halloween decorations at home can include the star of Bethlehem and other scenes from the Bible. Using the same decorations for Christmas is an added benefit and ensures that regardless of spiritual beliefs, Halloween night can be fun for all.
