What I’m Doing Now

This is a now page: what I’m focused on at this point in my life. Inspired by Derek Sivers.

Updated October 4, 2026 from Billings, MT

Simplify

I’ve digitized almost all of my CDs and books, and the books are mostly PDFs. I used to hate ebooks but have learned to love digital for the flexibility: easy to search, notate, and print a page or two if needed.

Websites

I no longer have any WordPress or Drupal sites. I’ve consolidated, everything is static, and only a few internal tools for music are not. More consolidation is coming.

I’m retired and not selling anything. It’s open source all the way, and it’s on GitHub. I don’t need the money that much, and I’m much more of a teacher than a marketer, but I appreciate any support I can get. If you’d like to send a dollar or two for dinner, I won’t say no.

Music

I’m not playing gigs anymore, but I’m still playing on my studio recordings, and I’m writing a lot. I have many, many songs, and I’m organizing, finishing and updating them. You can see what I’m up to at salsablanca.com, jongriffinmusician.com and on YouTube.

I’m also building open source tools for self-produced musicians and small labels. Music Assets Manager is a catalog and rights management system for songwriters and independent labels, so you keep your own catalog without a subscription. It’s close to release but not quite ready, and I already use it every day.

Business

The Cuban Masters Series is finished. I’m working on a few smaller projects, and they’ll be free. My big book is still going to be about Cuban music, most likely clave and the other things that make Cuban music different from the rest of the world. I have a deep library of material to draw from.

Health

I’ve had some health setbacks, including heart and shoulder surgery, and I’m getting back into weightlifting. It’s a lot harder as you get older. I walk an average of two miles a day, and I’m still mostly plant-based. For me that means mostly plants, not strict vegan, and if I eat some meat, that’s the way it goes.

Stay tuned

I’m organizing my life. I have music, books and other things coming that could be useful, especially for those of us over 50 or 60.
